Denise Boyer Merdich
Denise Boyer Merdich was a founding member of the 1985 U.S. Women’s National Team, bringing speed, skill, and a relentless attacking presence to the squad’s historic debut. A standout forward at the University of Puget Sound, she earned a place in history as the first USWNT Player of the Game and was known for her ability to change matches with decisive plays in the final third.
Before joining the national team, Boyer Merdich competed for the legendary Tacoma Cozars and became the first female recipient of the Tim McDonough Award. She remains celebrated for her leadership, technical ability, and pioneering role in growing the women’s game.
“When they played the national anthem… I still get emotional. I had my hand on my heart and all the gratitude hit me—my brother, my dad, my grandfather, my mom. Their lives changed to protect me, and now I was representing the United States,” she recalls.
