Legend Preview: Julie McCleery

Celebrating extraordinary female leaders in the Pacific Northwest

At each home match Seattle Reign and Starbucks will honor one woman as a Legend in recognition of her extraordinary contributions to our community and beyond. Legends are chosen from corporate, non-profit, academic, athletic, and civic organizations with a presence in Washington State. Each Legend has made a lasting impact in their respective field or discipline.

This Friday, we honor Julie McCleery, Professor, Researcher, Youth Advocate and mom. Read more about Julie below and stay tuned to read more about her full story:

cCleery works at University of Washington’s Center for Leadership and Athletics and co-founded King County Play Equity Coalition, an organization aiming to bring the transformative benefits of play, sports, outdoor recreation and physical activity to all youth.

McCleery has over 25 years of experience as an educator, coach and youth sports advocate and holds a bachelor's from Georgetown University, master's from Harvard and Ph.D. from the University of Washington. Prior to joining UW, she ran a consulting business assisting educational and non-profit clients.

A lifelong athlete, McCleery was part of the U.S. National Rowing Team as both an athlete and a coach. Now, with added experience coaching youth sports, she remains a steadfast advocate for improving youth access to sport, recreation and great coaching, and addressing barriers and opportunities for youth sport and physical activity in the county.
