Key Info Ahead of the Match:
1. LAST MEETING – The Reign and Current last met in Kansas City in June 2024 in a seven-goal match that resulted in a road loss for the Reign. In a tale of two halves, the Reign fell 5-2. Forward Jordyn Huitema netted a first half brace, twice giving Seattle the lead, but Kansas City answered back each time, forcing a 2-2 scoreline at the half.
After halftime, the Reign conceded two back-to-back goals in the 46th and 47th minutes, followed by a 67th minute penalty kick, ultimately dropping three points in the match.
All time, the Reign have earned five wins, five losses and one draw against the Current since the expansion team joined the league in 2021. The series is level on goals scored all-time, with each side netting 12 goals.
2. SCOUTING KANSAS CITY CURRENT – Kansas City currently sits atop of the NWSL standings with 15 points from six matches and a goal differential of 10. The team has conceded just four goals this season, tied for the best in the league.
Most recently, the Current were dealt their first loss of the season by the North Carolina Courage. Kansas City opened the scoring in the first half of the match, when forward Haley Hopkins scored her first goal for the club in 37th minute. The Courage answered back in the opening minutes of the first half, but forward Bia Zaneratto gave the Current the lead once again in the 57th minute. However, the home side scored two goals in the dying minutes of the match to serve the Current their first loss of the season.
3. BUILDING CONNECTIONS – As the season continues to progress, so do the connections that Reign players are building with one another each match. Through all six competitions this season, the Reign have fielded a unique lineup, combining the talent of fresh faces in the league with veteran international players. Made evident by plays like the Reign’s picture-perfect goal last weekend, the developing relationships like that of Sam Meza and Angharad James-Turner in the midfield are making all the difference for the Reign.
Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey has been huge for the Reign this season, recently making her 100th save for the club against Bay FC on the road, aided her backline anchors like Phoebe McClernon and Jordyn Bugg. Up top, the trio of Lynn Biyendolo, Maddie Dahlien and Jordyn Huitema continues to blossom, working to find their rhythm as a unit.
4. CONTINUING MOMENTUM – The Reign picked up a draw on the road against Bay FC, but inch closer to hitting their stride as the season kicks in to full gear. The team is always eager to return home to Lumen Field, fueled by the momentum of a home crowd. The team continues to share the wealth, adding a sixth unique goalscorer to the mix in San Jose, thanks to Huitema’s headed goal.
The match against Bay FC last weekend was a testament to the Reign’s club-defining grit. After going down a goal initially, the team clawed their way back into the match, finding and equalizing and bearing down in the final phase of the match to ensure the home side remained scoreless in the second half.
