1. LAST MEETING – The Reign and Denver Summit FC last met on April 4 at ONE Spokane Stadium in Spokane, Washington and battled to a scoreless draw. The match was back and forth, with both teams generating half chances, but never clearly dominating play. Denver had perhaps the best chance of the night in the 72nd minute as Yazmeen Ryan took a shot that required Claudia Dickey to make a save, but it was ultimately light work for the goalkeeper.
In the dying minutes of the match, Nerilia Mondesir nearly spurred a game-winning goal, as she cut the ball inside and fired off a shot, which then took a deflection and was up for grabs in the box. Maddie Mercado got on the end of it, heading it toward goal, but the effort went just over the bar.
Seattle and Denver have met just once as Denver joined the NWSL as an expansion team this season. Neither team has scored a goal in the head-to-head series.
2. SCOUTING DENVER – Denver currently holds a four-match unbeaten streak – tied for the longest such streak in the team’s season. Notably, they have scored 14 goals through four matches.
They were one of the three other teams that played midweek, taking on Bay FC at Centennial Stadium. Despite Denver holding a 2-0 lead in the match, the teams split the points, ultimately drawing 2-2.
Lindsey Heaps opened the scoring in the 42nd minute, assisted by Natalie Means. Janine Sonis doubled Denver’s lead in the 57th minute, finishing a cross from Yazmeen Ryan. However, Claire Hutton answered back in the 72nd minute before Taylor Huff, who earned the assist on Hutton’s goal, scored the latest goal in Bay FC history to secure a 2-2 draw.
3. BE HARD TO BEAT – Not satisfied with dropping points in Los Angeles, the Reign must turn their attention to being a team that’s hard to beat against Denver and for the remainder of the season, as Head Coach Laura Harvey noted post-match. Prior to taking on Angel City, the team strung together three shutout performances, so they will lean on strong defensive efforts to return to that pattern.
The squad will rely on the depth of their roster to continue navigating this busy stretch of the schedule that will ultimately see the Reign play three games from one Saturday to the next. Fans already saw a glimpse of the team’s depth, as Harvey made four changes to the lineup from Saturday to Wednesday.
Notably, the Reign are unbeaten against NWSL newcomers this season after drawing with Denver at home and winning in Boston back in May.
4. PLAYERS TO WATCH – Reign FC defender Sofia Huerta recorded her second goal in as many games on Wednesday, netting a beautiful strike from distance to get Reign FC on the board just before the final whistle. She not only provides strength on offense and defense, but calming, steady leadership for a young Reign side.
On the opposite end of the field, Maddie Dahlien has been a headache for opponents on the left wings. She boasts unmatched speed and is not afraid to take defenders on one vs. one.
For Denver, hometown hero Lindsey Heaps recorded her first two goals, scoring once in each of their last two matches. Summit has lost just one of the seven matches in which Heaps has appeared (W3 D3).
Co-captain Janine Sonis has proven to be another player to watch, as she leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and has also notched four assists. She has been a stalwart in Denver’s lineup, missing just one game this season.
