Match Recap: Reign FC Defeats San Diego Wave FC 2-0
Seattle Reign FC battled to a 2-0 win over the San Diego Wave at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Lifted to victory by goals from Maddie Mercado and Jordyn Bugg, and a two-assist performance from Ainsley McCammon, the Reign put together a full team performance to earn an important three points on the road.
San Diego had the first chance of the match just three minutes into the action, as Trinity Byars shot the ball from six yards out, but Claudia Dickey, back in the net for the first time since May 30, scooped up the attempt with ease.
The Reign began to transition forward into the attack and apply heavy pressure to the home side, sending a warning sign in the 13th minute, when McCammon threaded a ball to Mia Fishel just inside the 18-yard box. Fishel was able to turn her defender to face goal and fire off a shot, forcing a save from goalkeeper Sandra Paños. Sally Menti was there for the follow up chance but was unable to capitalize.
Four minutes later, Mercado opened the scoring of the match, giving Reign FC the early lead. From the left side of the field, McCammon took a touch inside to beat her defender before clipping a perfectly placed cross to a running Mercado, who headed the ball soundly into the back of the net.
Refusing to take their foot off the gas, the Reign doubled their lead just three minutes later. Menti served a corner kick across the box and McCammon got her head on it to keep it in the mix, before Bugg headed it across the goal line through the chaos.
Before the half came to a close, Dickey was called on to make a couple of saves but was up to the task. In the 44th minute, Melanie Barcenas used her quick footwork to take an unexpected shot, but Dickey stopped the danger at the near post. Five minutes later, Barcenas earned another shot, this time sending a close-range header on target, but Dickey pushed it over the bar to preserve her clean sheet.
For the third consecutive match, the Reign headed into the halftime break up 2-0, determined to maintain the lead.
As the match resumed, San Diego started on the front foot, applying increased pressure to the Reign’s backline. Dickey made another standout save in the 58th minute as Gia Corley flamed into the box and sent a low shot to the back post.
The entire squad was asked to drop back and defend as Seattle fought to hold onto their lead. In the 68th minute, Dickey stopped yet another point-blank shot, this time from just outside the six-yard box.
As the end of the match drew nearer, Head Coach Laura Harvey brought on defensive reinforcements in the form of players like Madison Curry, Angharad James-Turner and Emily Mason. A combination of grit and leadership allowed the Reign to keep San Diego off the board and return home to Seattle three points richer.
