Match Recap: Reign FC falls 2-1 in midweek matchup

From Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, Maddie Mercado gave Reign FC a first-half lead before Emma Sears bagged a brace to complete Racing Louisville's comeback.

From the first whistle, it was clear that Louisville’s direct press would struggle to get through the Reign’s backline. Just three minutes into the match Holly Ward gained possession of the ball and surged up the left side of the field, bypassing several defenders as she claimed the flank.

The Canadian international centered the ball, but the play had to be recycled as Louisville thwarted the chance, but Ryanne Brown immediately stepped up and got the ball back into the box to Mia Fishel, who directed a header toward goal but ultimately off target.

Seattle firmly held the reins of the match, dictating the tempo and enjoying the vast majority of possession over the home side. In the 18th minute, Nerilia Mondesir had a look on goal as she received a ball in the air and juggled it at her feet before unleashing a volley on frame, but the attempt was directly at Jordyn Bloomer in the net.

One minute later, Mercado added her seventh goal of the season to give the Reign the lead as she turned a small chance into a stellar strike. The forward was perfectly positioned to pick up a deflected shot just inside the 18-yard box and take a touch to set up a left-footed shot to the upper right corner of the goal.

The Reign continued to dominate the first half until Louisville got on the board against the run of play. Lauren Milliet received a lofted ball over the top of the Reign’s backline and took a touch to direct it into the path of Emma Sears, who cleanly found the back of the net.

After going into the halftime break level, the teams came out fighting for three points. Louisville found the back of the net again in the 52nd minute, once again from the foot of Sears. After the Reign lost possession of the ball, Milliet cut a ball into the center of the box for Sears to finish.

Seattle attempted to answer on the other side of the pitch in the 57th minute, as Fishel and Ward had back-to-back chances on a corner kick, but Bloomer made consecutive saves to deny the Reign.

A flurry of subs reenergized the Reign throughout the final minutes of the match as they attempted to find an equalizer before the final whistle, but none of the team’s 13 second half shots made it beyond Bloomer.
