Match Recap: Reign FC Falls 3-1 in Los Angeles

Seattle Reign FC fell 3-1 to Angel City FC at BMO Stadium on Wednesday night. The team conceded three consecutive goals before Sofia Huerta answered back in second-half stoppage time. 

In the first fifteen minutes of the match, the teams split possession equally. Angel City enjoyed the better of the chances in the attack, but the Reign’s backline limited the home side to two shots, both of which were off target. 

As the teams settled into the match, Phoebe McClernon was called on to shut down a cross from Sveindís Jónsdóttir. The forward sliced a ball across the face of Reign FC’s goal, but McClernon stepped in to clear it over the endline and out of the reach of Angel City’s attack. 

Three minutes later, Angel City was awarded a penalty kick when a ball popped out to Maiara Niehues in the box and she volleyed it toward goal, into the arm of a jumping Reign FC player. Ally Sentnor stepped up to the spot to take the kick and found the back of the net to give her team the lead. 

The Reign fought to get into the attack after conceding but struggled to breakthrough the final line needed to get in on goal. It looked as though the Reign were set to equalize in the 25th minute when Sarah Gorden knocked a half clearance to the feet of captain Jess Fishlock. The Welsh midfielder took a shot, looping to the back post, but the woodwork kept it out of the back of the net. Maddie Dahlien attempted to follow up, but Angel City’s defense cleared the danger. 

In the 40th minute, Angel City doubled their lead on a corner kick. Evelyn Shores found the head of Borges at the top of six-yard box and the Brazilian directed it straight into the back of the net to close out the scoring of the first half. 

Angel City extended their lead in the 81st minute, when substitute Taylor Suarez received a pass from Shores down the left side of the field and immediately cut into the box and directed a shot to the right side of the goal, bringing the score to 3-0. 

To close out the match, Sofia Huerta got the Reign on the board with a stunning strike from outside the 18-yard box. She picked up the ball and dribbled to the middle of the field, never pausing before unleashing a shot that left a diving Angelina Anderson no chance.
