Match Recap: Reign FC Falls to Utah at Lumen Field

Seattle Reign FC suffered a 3-0 defeat against Utah Royals FC in the club’s 2026 Lumen Field Home Opener on Sunday evening. Paige Cronin, Narumi Miura and Cloé Lacasse all scored in the first half for the visitors.

It was a rough start for the Reign as the Royals took a 1-0 lead inside the 1st minute. Miura pounced on an errant back pass and drove into the box before picking out the run of Cronin, who dispatched her goal with a first-time finish.

Utah extended their lead in the 7th minute when Miura’s long-range shot took a massive deflection en route to goal, wrong-footing Claudia Dickey and sending the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Seattle got its first quality opportunity in the 18th minute as Sofia Huerta whipped an inviting cross to the back post that narrowly missed the head of Brittany Ratcliffe. Two minutes later, Maddie Mercado played an inch-perfect through-ball into the path of Ratcliffe, who attempted to chip the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper, but Mia Justus came up with the save.

The Reign’s best chance of the half came in the 31st minute as a mis-cleared cross fell to the feet of Jess Fishlock, who shopped the ball past one defender before firing a left-footed shot that rattled the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Fishlock nearly produced a moment of magic as she pulled off a bicycle kick, but her effort rolled wide of the post.

In the 35th minute, Dickey pulled out one of the best saves of the season as she produced a flying fingertip save to push a powerful shot onto the crossbar.

Just as the Reign looked like they would pull one back before the halftime break, Utah scored a decisive third goal in stoppage time. Ana Tejada threaded a pass to Lacasse down the left channel, who took one touch to settle before firing her shot inside the near post.

Fishlock was forced to exit the match after suffering an injury in the 64th minute. The Reign legend was carried off the field under a chorus of cheers from the over 8,000 fans in the stands.

Seattle nearly pulled one back in the 72nd minute as Maddie Mercado struck a swerving shot from outside the box, forcing Justus into an acrobatic diving save.

The Reign carved out one more quality chance in the 90th minute, with Mia Fishel flicking an Emeri Adames freekick on target from close range, but the Utah goalkeeper came up with the stop.
