Ryanne Brown's Road Back: How Seattle Reign Defender Turned Adversity Into Opportunity

It’s been a big season for Ryanne Brown.

The defender, who has been with the Reign since the 2022 NWSL Draft, has compiled a resume of impressive feats in 2026 – returning to play from an ACL and meniscus injury, earning her first start in almost two years, scoring her first NWSL regular season goal and now – extending her contract with Reign FC.

The 27-year-old traveled a winding path to this point. But she was up to the challenge every step of the way, fueled by her support system and deep-rooted love for soccer.

“This journey just showed me how much support I have,” said Brown. "I feel like my teammates, my friends and family were my rock throughout it all, and it made the already difficult journey so much easier. I had the best support system, and I feel like maybe if that wouldn't have happened, I wouldn't have been so grateful for just the sport in itself and for being able to do what I love."

Praised by her teammates and coaches as hardworking since day one, Brown’s journey with Reign took her on loan to FC Nordsjælland in Denmark for the latter half of her rookie season before she returned to the club and began to break into the Reign’s lineup. She racked up 20 regular season appearances before sustaining her season-ending injury, but perhaps unexpectedly, the injury allowed Brown to deepen a completely different part of her game: her leadership on the team.

“This taught me how resilient I can be, but it also taught me how much of a leader I can be as well. Obviously, I couldn’t showcase things on the field, so I just tried my best to help some of the younger players using my knowledge of the game. I sat in on film sessions and just kind of tried to be a voice when I couldn't be out there on the field.”

The defender hit a major milestone in her recovery in the Reign’s season opener in Orlando, when she subbed onto the pitch, making her long awaited return to play. The gravity of that moment was felt by every member of the club. But for Brown, it was a reward for the fruits of her labor and reflected the hard work she put in during her journey to recover.

“It was a long year and a half, so obviously there were some nerves going into like my first time stepping on the field again. I was just extremely proud of myself. It takes a lot to get through something like that.”

She continued, “Throughout the process, I just had to continue to give myself praise and just take it one step at a time. So, when I was able to finally step on the field, it just kind of encapsulated everything that I had been through and the journey it took to get there. I was just really proud of myself.”

Now, Brown has accumulated six appearances this season – including her first start since July 2024. That start brought an extra special performance from the outside back, as she tallied her first NWSL regular season goal just eight minutes into the Cascadia Rivalry match.

“You have a different responsibility when you start, so obviously there were some nerves, but I think that my coaches and my teammates all prepared me in a way where I could go out there and be confident, and know that they were all confident in me.”

As for the goal? Brown certainly didn’t expect it to happen, but when the opportunity presented itself, there was no way she was going to let it pass her by.

“It was honestly surreal. I kind of blacked out,” laughed Brown. “This is all what it meant, though. This is what all the hard work meant, all the adversity and taking everything day-by-day. When I saw the ball hit the back of the net, I just felt so much joy.”

All the resilience she has shown on and off the pitch has not gone unnoticed anyone at the club, so it’s no surprise that she recently extended her contract, keeping her in the Emerald City through the 2027 season. The decision to stay in Seattle was an easy one for the defender, as the city has become her second home.

“Obviously, the past two years have been really challenging with the injury, and I feel like I'm finally at a point where I'm in form and I feel like myself. I think Seattle is a great place for me to continue to prove that I can play at this level, and not only that, but this club has stuck beside me through those really difficult times, which I'm extremely grateful for.”

Now that she has returned to the field, the sky is the limit for Brown and she has some lofty goals, not only for herself, but for the entire team.

“Obviously, we want to win championships. That's first and foremost the goal. Then for myself personally, I just want to continue to make an impact everywhere I can throughout the rest of this year and in 2027.”
