Strong defensive performance guides Reign FC to three points

After a March meeting with Portland Thorns FC left Seattle Reign FC with a bad taste in their mouth, there was no room for error as the rematch at Lumen Field on Sunday unfolded in front of the fourth-largest crowd in club history. The Seattle sunshine provided the perfect backdrop for the hatred-fueled battle – and the Reign proved they were up to the challenge from the first whistle.

In a rivalry match, every detail matters. From the electric energy of the crowd to the focus on the field, these matches mean more. Though the entire Reign squad rose to the challenge in the 2-0 victory over the Thorns, Seattle’s defensive core posted a particularly impressive performance on Sunday afternoon.

Earning the club’s second shutout win of the 2026 season and first since March 25, the squad shut down the most dangerous attacking team in the NWSL.

"I think this week in particular, we were really focused on that. I think some games in the past, we've been getting broken down, and I think a big focus was defensively, how can we be sturdy? How can we be strong? How do we get that clean sheet,” said Reign FC goalkeeper Cassie Miller.

The Reign’s entire defensive unit, from goalkeeper to backline, put in impressive shifts. From the first minute, Miller, the eventual Player of the Match, made her veteran presence known in the net as she denied Portland time and time again, both frustrating their star-studded offense and allowing her own team to feel comfortable transitioning forward into the attack.

In just her second Reign appearance, she made a total of nine saves, a new single-match high for her, in addition to stringing together the third-most passes of any player on the field.

“Me and Cassie are kind of bearing similar situations coming back from injury, and I see all the work she's put in to get to this moment,” said defender Ryanne Brown. “So, it's really cool to see that pay off, but yeah, you guys saw it. She made some huge saves for us, kept us like with the lead, with the shutout. I think her performance kind of speaks for itself.”

Feeding off the chemistry and confidence of the group, Brown herself was the next member of the backline to make waves in the match, scoring the game-winning goal just eight minutes into the action. In her first start since 2024, the Indianapolis native used her speed and skill to press forward to get on the end of a long ball from Ainsley McCammon and made no mistake as she took a touch and fired into to the top corner from outside the box.

“Honestly kudos for Ryanne. She’s been balling in practices this whole year, so for her to step in, like, yeah, she might be nervous, but she was prepared; She was ready. So, for her and the rest of her backline, they were strong. They were a wall, and we were able to find a way,” said Miller.

Anchoring the remainder of the backline was the trio of Jordyn Bugg, Sofia Huerta and Phoebe McClernon.

Supported by the veteran presence of both Huerta and McClernon, Bugg had a solid match in her fourth start of the season. She made seven clearances and connected the most passes of any Reign player on the field, displaying not only her defensive skills, but her ability to kickstart plays out the back – something that has proven to be a valuable tool in the Reign’s attacking belt.

Huerta, Reign FC’s co-captain alongside veteran Jess Fishlock, is one of two players to have started in every Reign match this season. She made one tackle and two clearances, in addition to taking two shots and earning a passing accuracy of 90%. Even with an impressive showing on the stat sheet, Huerta’s leadership from her place in the backline makes her an irreplaceable player.

Similarly, McClernon has been a stalwart for Seattle as the club’s last line of defense. A vocal leader on the pitch, she won four tackles and recorded 11 clearances, leading the team in both categories.

Though it wasn’t a perfect match by any means, the backline showcased the grit and tenacity that has defined the Reign’s identity since 2013.

“I thought the backline did a great job,” said Head Coach Laura Harvey. “I thought Phoebe and Jordyn Bugg defensively, today were very, very good. And I think the three of Sofia, Jordyn and Phoebe made it challenging for them with the ball. There was a couple of times I felt we could have made different decisions, but we never shot ourselves in the foot, and that's been something as a group that we've done so again, I think we have to take a little bit of pride in that and talk about it because it's important.”

Now, the Reign look to build off this victory as the team heads out on three-match road stretch, beginning this Saturday against Gotham FC in New York City. Fans can tune in to the action at 9:00 a.m. PT on ABC.
