Ana-Maria Crnogorčević and Switzerland Advance to EURO Knockout Stage
After capturing one win, one loss and one draw in Group A of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, Switzerland has advanced to its first-ever quarter-final match in the tournament.
It all came down to the host country’s final group stage match against Finland. Though the first half went scoreless, the Swiss found themselves trailing 1-0 after Finland converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute of the match.
Switzerland put everything they had into the final minutes of the match, led veterans like Crnogorčević who subbed onto the pitch at half time. Relief finally came when Riola Xhemaili scored an equalizer off a Géraldine Reuteler cross two minutes into stoppage time.
The draw was enough to send Switzerland through to the quarter-final from second place in Group A. Next up, the squad will take on Spain or Italy, pending the result of Friday’s match.
This marks the first time that Switzerland has advanced to knockout phase of the tournament following group stage exits in 2017 and 2022.
