Seattle Reign FC defender Sofia Huerta has been nominated for NWSL Player of the Week for her performances against the Kansas City Current and Racing Louisville FC.
A stalwart in the backline, Huerta played a full 180 minutes during the busy week, anchoring the team against two tough opponents at ONE Spokane Stadium. Against the Current, she recorded assists on two of three goals in Seattle’s dominant 3-0 victory.
She controlled the right side of the field, serving both assists into the box from her position out wide. Her first assist was teed up by Emeri Adames with a simple pass to her feet. Huerta made no mistake as she looped a picture-perfect cross to the back post, where Brittany Ratcliffe was poised to strike a volley into the back of the net and double the Reign’s lead in the first half. In an eerily similar position, Huerta struck again less than 10 minutes later, this time finding the head of Maddie Mercado to add a third goal to the Reign’s tally.
"We didn't create enough overloads in the wide areas on Friday and two of the goals came from that today,” said Reign FC Head Coach Laura Harvey following the match against Kansas City on Wednesday.
“There's no one better in this league at crossing the ball from those positions than Sof, and that's why she's got the records that she's got and the assists that she's got. So really happy for her.”
On the other side of the ball, she played standout defense as a leader in a Reign backline that only conceded one goal across the two matches. In total, she won 12 duels, five tackles and managed six clearances during the week.
She’s nominated for Player of the Week alongside San Diego’s Lia Godfrey and Dudinha and Denver Summit’s Abby Smith.
