Five reasons to attend the United States Women’s National Team match at Lumen Field
One week from today, the United States Women’s National Team is coming to Lumen Field for an international friendly against Japan.
It’s an exciting opportunity for Seattle soccer fans to see the most dominant team in the history of international soccer on the biggest stage ahead of NWSL soccer returning to Lumen Field on April 26. Here are five reasons to attend the match:
Claudia Dickey Called Up
Seattle Reign FC’s own goalkeeper, Claudia Dickey, has been called up to Emma Hayes’ 26 player roster for the April international window, meaning she could play for the Stars and Stripes right here at Lumen Field. She is one of three goalkeepers to receive a call-up this window, alongside Jane Campbell and Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Between the three of them, they have a total of 24 caps. Campbell leads the pack with 10 caps, but she has not earned a cap since February 2025. Dickey is close behind with eight caps, while Tullis-Joyce has six.
In her eight appearances for the USWNT, Dickey has recorded seven shutouts. She most recently represented the U.S. at the 2026 SheBelieves Cup, helping the team capture the title after falling to Japan in the 2025 edition. Since earning her first call-up in January 2025, Dickey has established herself as a consistent presence in the USWNT goalkeeping group.
USWNT-Japan Rivalry
The United States Women’s National Team and Japan have developed a fierce rivalry over time, meeting in high stakes matches more the once. In 2011, Japan won its first FIFA Women’s World Cup title after defeating the USWNT in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime. Four years later, the U.S. flipped the script, defeating Japan 5-2 in the FIFA Women's World Cup Final. All-time, the Stars & Stripes are 32-2-8 against Japan.
Japan enters these three friendlies fresh off winning the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. The team won all six matches in the tournament, outscoring the opponents 29-1. They went on to defeat the host country Australia in the title game and by advancing to the semifinals of the tournament, Japan qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The USWNT’s roster is up for the challenge of taking on their rival squad in the three-match series, as this window features a star-studded roster. Familiar faces from the NWSL, like Rose Lavelle, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson are all named to the roster, which features zero uncapped players for just the second time across Emma Hayes’ tenure as head coach.
Club & Country Pack
Fans can attend the match with ease by securing a Club & Country Pack! This pack not only features a ticket to see the USWNT vs. Japan match but also includes a ticket to see Reign FC take on defending NWSL Champions Gotham FC at Lumen Field on May 15.
It’s no secret that NWSL players continue to push the United States Women’s National Team to new heights, and this is perfect opportunity to see the international game in action, followed just over a month later by one of the most exciting matchups the NWSL has to offer.
Seattle Soccer is So Back
Reign FC and Sounders FC alike have spent a substantial period of time away from Lumen Field to start their respective seasons as the venue prepares to host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Now, the stage is set and the United States vs. Japan friendly is the perfect way to kick off this new beginning for Seattle soccer fans.
To celebrate the occasion, Reign FC introduced the United We Reign merchandise collection, featuring two t-shirts, a sweatshirt and a scarf. The exclusive collection was created to meet the moment and honor the USWNT as they take the field at Reign FC’s home stadium against Japan. It celebrates the shared power, movement and unstoppable energy of the women’s game.
History of USWNT in Seattle
This is a rare opportunity for fans to see the women’s national team in action in the Emerald City. Seattle has long been a foundational market for women’s soccer in the United States, with deep ties to the U.S. Women’s National Team spanning decades.
Though, they have only played in the state of Washington five times in their storied history, most recently taking on Australia in 2017 and Brazil in 2015. Prior to those two matches, the U.S. Women had not played in Seattle since two Women’s World Cup Qualifying matches in 2002 that were played at SAFECO Field, home of the Seattle Mariners. The USA scored a combined 16 goals in those two matches, with wins over Panama and Costa Rica.
The U.S. did play one other match in Washington, which was against Brazil, winning a combative fixture 3-0 at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma in May of 1995.
The excitement in Seattle doesn’t stop with the match. U.S. Soccer also hosts the eighth edition of the SheBelieves Summit, presented by Deloitte, on April 14-15, right here in Seattle. To learn more about the lineup of talent, plus register for the event, visit the U.S. Soccer website here.
After playing in Seattle, the United States Women’s National Team plays one more match against Japan at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado to close out the international window, at which time the NWSL season will resume.
For the Reign, this means that the team finally returns home to Lumen Field after opening the season with five matches on the road and in Spokane.
