Reign FC started a new tradition on Monday, August 18, honoring the trailblazing women that built the backbone of the beautiful game in America. For the inaugural Queen’s Match, the club welcomed the 1985 United States Women’s National Team to Lumen Field.
The trailblazing group of 17 women forged their own path, uplifting the women’s game in the United States. The team traveled to Italy to play the squad’s first-ever international competition, irrevocably laying the groundwork the United States Women’s National Team to become the dominant force they are today. Reign FC welcomed the 85ers home, as eight members of the team have proud Washington State roots.
It’s more than just a match
It’s an all-encompassing celebration of the women who built the game as we know it, hosted where it all began. We’re remembering Seattle’s legacy in the global game, bringing generations past, present and future along.

AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY
The history of women’s soccer in the United States and across the globe is riddled with tales of grit and tenacity, fueled by the desire to make change, but more than anything, the love of the game. A group of 17 women leapt into uncharted in the summer of 1985 and never looked back.
ROOTED IN THE EMERALD CITY
Four decades ago, the first-ever USWNT, competed in the Mundialito tournament in Jesolo, Italy. While they didn’t know it at the time, they set into motion a 40-year period of the U.S. women dominating the global game. Eight of the 17 players on the roster hailed from the Seattle area.
A NEW TRADITION IS BORN
On Monday, August 18, Seattle Reign FC ushered in a powerful new tradition for the city of Seattle. A match to honor the rich legacy of the city and spotlight the incredible women that pioneered the beautiful game, right here from our home in the Pacific Northwest – The Queen’s Match.

Up until this point, the story of the 1985 United States Women’s National Team has largely gone unrecognized. Hastily documented and overshadowed by later teams, the pioneers of the of the game are reclaiming their legacy, 40 years later.
