The Queen’s Match: Welcoming the 1985 U.S. Women’s National Team Home

On Monday, August 18, Seattle Reign FC ushers in a new tradition for the city of Seattle. A match to honor the rich legacy of the city and spotlight the incredible women that pioneered the beautiful game, right here from our home in the Pacific Northwest – The Queen’s Match.

Facing off against Chicago Stars FC, this match is an opportunity for fans of all ages to come together and celebrate the soccer city that Seattle is – and always has been. Long before the women’s game garnered global recognition, our region was quietly laying the groundwork, building the backbone for the American women’s game to thrive.

For the first annual Queen’s Match, Reign FC recognizes the 1985 United States Women’s National Team and celebrates 40 years since they first took the field. The squad featured a roster of 17 women who made history and changed the women’s game forever, as they took a leap and boarded a plane to Jesolo, Italy to play at the Mundialito tournament – the first-ever international competition the United States Women’s National Team participated in.

They didn’t know it at the time, but they lit a spark that would fuel the rise of game not only in Seattle, but nationwide, establishing the foundation for what would become the most dominant force in international soccer – the United States Women’s National Team. Before the first Women’s World Cup, before the iconic 1999 United States Women’s National Team, there were the 85ers.

From the very beginning, Seattle was an integral part of building the game. The inaugural roster included eight women that hailed from Washington and six that went to college here, fitting for a city built by queens.

To the day, The Queen’s Match marks the 40th anniversary of that historic debut and welcomes the 85ers home. A series of matchday events will allow fans to pay tribute to the courage, influence and impact these inspiring athletes displayed as they competed with a level of grit and heart that forged their indelible legacy.
