Jess Fishlock Set to Close Out Iconic Welsh Career Tomorrow

Trailblazer, icon, legend – all words befitting Jess Fishlock’s career with the Welsh National Team.

Fishlock got her start with the national team at the U-19 level when she was just 16 years old and blossomed from there, becoming the captain of the squad before making her senior national team debut in 2006 against Switzerland. She added her first international goal the same year.

Her 19-year international career has taken her through a journey of unprecedented change and development as the women’s soccer landscape has evolved and progressed so vastly over that period of time, driven by players like her.

Over the course of two decades, Fishlock changed the game forever with her crafty skills in the middle of the field and unwavering leadership displayed both on and off the pitch. Often flying across the world to split her time between club and country, her consistency and commitment led her to hold the all-time Cymru appearance record and goalscoring record – for men and women.

Fishlock has 165 caps with Wales and will close out her career against Australia on Saturday, bringing her total to 166. She has added 48 goals all-time for Wales, across a number of different international competitions.

This summer, Fishlock unlocked the last major accomplishment of her international career – competing at a major tournament with Wales. The team qualified for the Euros after a dramatic play-off victory over the Republic of Ireland in 2024.

Though the campaign in Switzerland did not go to plan for Wales and the team endured three losses in the group stage, Fishlock made history once again, becoming the first Welsh goalscorer in the tournament and simultaneously, the oldest player to score in the tournament.

Though her international career may be coming to a close, the impact that she has left on the game, in Wales and beyond, is immeasurable. A true legend of the game, her legacy will continue on, fueling the next generation.

Be sure to follow along with all the action of her final match with Wales on Saturday, October 25. The match kicks off at 6:00 a.m. PT from Cardiff City Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
