Key Info Ahead of the Match:
1. LAST MEETING – Seattle and Portland last met in a friendly match over the summer break from NWSL play. The teams battled to a 0-0 draw in regulation, but the Reign claimed victory in the penalty kick shootout that ensued.
In the regular season, Reign FC hosted the Thorns at Lumen Field in April. The match was decided by a single goal, scored by rookie forward Maddie Dahlien, just four minutes into the match. It was her first-ever NWSL goal and assisted by forward Lynn Biyendolo, who made her first start for the Reign in the match.
In all NWSL competitions, Seattle and Portland are level, with 16 wins, 16 losses and 10 draws in the head-to-head series.
2. SCOUTING PORTLAND THORNS FC – The Thorns currently sit in sixth place in the NWSL standings – just one place below the Reign. They have earned six wins, four losses and four draws in total.
Most recently, Portland lost 2-1 to the Washington Spirit. The Spirit opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Rosemonde Kouassi served a cross into the box for Gift Monday to tap home. The home side only held onto the lead for about half an hour, as Portland’s Olivia Moultrie equalized with a quality strike before halftime. In the dying minutes of the match, Washington star Trinity Rodman, who made her return from injury, rocketed a game-winner into the back of the net.
The loss marked Portland’s fourth of the season and third time facing defeat by just one goal.
3. RIVALRY MEANS MORE – It’s no secret that the Reign vs. Thorns rivalry means more. The most storied rivalry in NWSL history, there’s never a dull meeting between the opponents. For over a decade, the rivalry has been headlined by Reign FC’s originals – Lauren Barnes and Jess Fishlock – and this edition is no exception. Bringing leadership to the squad on and off the pitch, they know more than anyone what it means to compete against Portland.
Adding a new element to the rivalry, both teams bring a swarm of fresh faces in the 2025 season. For many of Reign FC’s young players, this will be their first regular season matchup at Providence Park. Fueled by the passion of each city’s fans, this is truly a can’t-miss match.
To make the stakes even higher, the winner of this match will lead the head-to-head series, as it is currently tied at 16 wins apiece. The teams are also back-to-back in the NWSL standings, so every point counts.
4. PLAYERS TO WATCH – Reign FC’s return to NWSL last week was led by two standout players – Jess Fishlock and Sofia Huerta. Fishlock scored the game-winning goal against Angel City, originally set up by Huerta. The veteran entered the match at halftime and immediately re-energized the squad. The two combined once again to force an Angel City own goal to further the Reign’s lead. Huerta, coming off her loan in France, played 90 minutes against Angel City FC.
For Portland, captain Sam Coffey is a stalwart of the team’s success. The midfielder has played in 13 matches for the Thorns and contributed on both offense and defense. She’s notched one goal and three assists, as well as 22 tackles and 13 interceptions. Young midfielder Olivia Moultrie has recently made waves as well, scoring the lone goal in the Thorns match against Washington. She has appeared in all 14 matches Portland has played this season, including eight 90-minute matches.
