2. LAST MEETING – Seattle and Utah last met in June in Sandy, Utah, where the Reign downed the home side 4-1. Midfielder Ji So-Yun got the scoring started early, when she settled a ball in the box and struck it low to the left to take the lead. Just ten minutes later, forward Maddie Dahlien connected with Ji and doubled the Reign’s lead over Utah.
The Royals pulled a goal back in the 31st minute as Ally Sentnor took a powerful shot from distance, forcing an acrobatic save from Claudia Dickey, but Bianca St-Georges pounced on the rebound and scored from close range. Seattle put the match out of reach for Utah, as Ji set up Emeri Adames to coolly curl a shot to the far post, bringing the Reign’s tally to three. Adames added the icing on the cake, as she stepped up to sink a penalty kick in stoppage time.
In all NWSL competitions, Seattle and Utah have met 12 times. The Reign have earned seven wins, two losses and three draws, netting 17 total goals.
3. SCOUTING UTAH – Utah most recently hosted San Diego Wave FC and fell 3-2. Prior to that match, the team was on an eight-game unbeaten streak. The Royals claimed an early lead when Janni Thomsen and Nuria Rábano connected, allowing Thomsen to drive her shot from outside the box into the lower left corner of the goal. However, Dudinha leveled the game just 20 minutes later, as she settled a ball atop the box and unleashed a shot. In stoppage time of the first half, Utah conceded an own goal off a corner kick and headed into the locker room down 2-1.
Mina Tanaka pulled Utah level once again as she jumped on a mistake from San Diego’s backline in the 54th minute, but San Diego secured the victory in the 72nd minute, when Kenza Dali added yet another strike from outside of the box, bypassing Mandy McGlynn in goal for Utah.
4. PLAYERS TO WATCH – In Reign FC’s final regular-season home match, club OGs Lauren Barnes and Jess Fishlock are the players to watch. As announced on Monday, Barnes will be retiring from professional soccer after the 2025 NWSL season concludes. The veteran defender brings an unmatched sense of leadership to the pitch and can help the Reign’s young roster in the final push for the playoffs. Fishlock, another undeniable leader on the squad, has been making an immediate impact each time she steps onto the pitch this season. In the Reign’s matchup with Bay FC last Friday, she put in a 27-minute shift and scored the game-tying goal to secure a point for the Reign.
For Utah, Mina Tanaka has been a force this season, scoring six goals for the Royals – double the number of goals any other player on the roster has contributed this season. The Japanese midfielder scored in Utah’s last match, using her quality to punish San Diego for a mistake in the box. Utah’s captain, Paige Monaghan is another player to watch. Her leadership has propelled the team into form as the season is winding down. She has scored three goals and added two assist this season for the Royals.
