Seattle Reign FC midfielder Jess Fishlock has been nominated for NWSL Player of the Week for her performance against Angel City FC on Friday. Her first nomination of the season, Fishlock’s 45-minute performance was packed with veteran leadership, unrivaled skill and her name splashed across the scoresheet.

The match on Friday was long awaited, as it was the return of NWSL play after a long summer break to accommodate for international play. Fishlock, a Welsh international, had a busy July, as she led Wales to their first-ever major tournament - the Euros. Though the team did not advance out of the group stage, their historical run altered the Welsh game forever.

Upon her return to Seattle, it didn’t take long for Fishlock to remind fans and foes just what she was capable of. Subbing onto the pitch after halftime, the midfielder made an immediate impact. Her soccer IQ allowed her to see pockets of space that previously sat unoccupied, giving the Reign an attacking advantage.

She netted the first goal of the match in the 66th minute, after connecting with defender Sofia Huerta. Huerta lofted a ball in the air to the back post allowing Fishlock to head it toward goal. Her initial shot was saved but she pounced on the rebound, sending the ball flying into the back of the net.

She helped to double the Reign’s lead 20 minutes later, as she connected with Huerta again and flicked the ball toward goal with just enough on it to force an Angel City FC own goal.

She’s nominated for Player of the Week alongside Chicago Stars FCs’ Ally Schlegel, Washington Spirit’s Croix Bethune and Bay FC’s Rachael Kundananji.
