Seattle Reign FC Extends Defender Sofia Huerta Through 2027

Seattle Reign FC announced today that the club has extended defender Sofia Huerta’s contract through the 2027 NWSL season*.

“I’m so excited to stay in Seattle and sign an extension here with the Reign,” said Huerta. “Since joining the team in 2020, I’ve felt the support from our fans and I’m looking forward to growing that connection while getting more involved in the community. For years we’ve been a winning team and competed for trophies and I can’t wait to continue that with this team!”

Huerta is in her fourth season with the Reign, recording 59 starts in 62 regular season games since joining the club via trade with the Houston Dash in 2020. This season, Huerta joins goalkeeper Claudia Dickey as the only two players on the team to play all 270 minutes through three games.

In three full seasons with Reign FC, Huerta has registered 12 assists, the fifth-most assists in club history. She’s also one of 12 players in Reign FC history to surpass 5,000 regular season minutes played. Since 2021, Huerta leads all Reign players in assists, crosses (341) and chances created (105).

A true veteran in the NWSL, the versatile defender has a long list of accomplishments and accolades across the league. Huerta was selected by the Chicago Red Stars as the 11th overall pick in the 2015 NWSL Draft and has since totaled 172 regular season appearances and 161 starts, which ranks ninth and 11th in league history, respectively. She also has the eighth-most minutes played all-time in the NWSL (14,556).

The 31-year-old has tallied 31 regular-season assists, tied for the most assists in NWSL history. Along with her 31 assists, Huerta has scored 35 goals, establishing herself as one of two players with at least 30 goals and 30 assists all-time. The Idaho native is also the only player in the league to record at least one goal and two assists in every NWSL season between 2015 and 2023.

“Sofia Huerta has had a notable career in the NWSL. Here at Seattle Reign FC, we are pleased that her foreseeable future is cemented here,” said Seattle Reign FC General Manager Lesle Gallimore. “Sofia’s evolution as a player has been fantastic to watch, and when there’s an obstacle or challenge to be met, she does it with a champion’s mentality. She’s elite in her role on the field and is an empowered leader in the club.”

Through eight full seasons in the league, Huerta has earned either NWSL Best XI First Team or Second Team selections a combined five times, tied for the sixth-most selections in NWSL history. In 2022, Huerta was named to the NWSL Best XI First Team and was a finalist for NWSL Defender of the Year. She stands alone as the only player in NWSL history to earn Best XI First Team or Second Team honors with three different clubs, playing three different positions.

At the international level, Huerta earned her first-ever World Cup call-up on June 21, 2023. The defender has earned a total of 32 caps and four assists with the United States Women's National Team after debuting for the squad on September 15, 2017.
